Jazz Musician Adds Strings to Celebrate New Album Release – Nanaimo News Bulletin

Juno-nominated saxophonist Ryan Oliver will perform in Nanaimo to celebrate the release of his latest album, Ryan Oliver With Strings.

Oliver’s show on May 22 is at Simonholt, 6582 Applecross Rd., and begins at 7:30 p.m.

According to a statement from the show, a string quartet will accompany Oliver along with his own jazz quartet – including keyboardist Tony Genge, bassist Ken Lister and drummer Hans Verhoeven.

“Oliver soaked his concept and craft in the creative fires of Amsterdam, honed his craft in Toronto, and fulfilled his dream of joining thousands of saxophonists in crowded jam sessions for several years in the jazz metropolis of New York before returning to British Columbia and the natural beauty of Vancouver Island,” the statement noted.

“For over 15 years, Oliver toured the world with legendary Canadian jazz band The Shuffle Demons and played with a ‘who’s who’ of the Canadian jazz scene. His saxophone timbre and his musical universe reflect the singularity of these scenes and his musical journey.

Tickets for the May 22 show are priced at $25 for general admission, $15 for students. They are available from Simonholt, 250-933-3338, Fascinating Rhythm, 250-716-9997, and Arbutus Music, 250-933-1900.
